The University of North Texas Libraries invite applications for the 2020 UNT Special Collections Research Fellowship. Research in special collections is relevant to studies in a variety of disciplines including history, journalism, political science, geography, fine art, art history and American studies. We encourage applicants to think creatively about new uses for special collections. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate the greatest potential for publication and the best use of special collections at UNT Libraries.

Project Title

The Music of Maynard Ferguson

Project Description

An overview of the Maynard Ferguson Collection at UNT with an emphasis on the Ferguson Band from 1957 through 1969. This period is referred to as the “Roulette” era. The project is a look at the arrangers, composers, and their music in an aural and visual presentation.

Biography

Edward Etkins is a graduate of the Philadelphia Musical Academy, where he received his BM and BME. Edward achieved his Master of Music degree from Arcadia University, where he currently is an adjunct professor of music. He also completed graduate studies at Rutgers University.
