Hiking around Steamboat Springs is abundant - there's Spring Creek, Mad Creek, Sarvis
Creek and others. But, try to walk from one end of town to the other and the options drop
off significantly.
The four-mile Yampa River Core Trail is one of the only continuous pedestrian routes
through town. There are sidewalks in spots, but all-in-all Steamboat does not provide a
pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, Steamboat Springs officials say. Pedestrian and bicycle
safety expert Dan Burden will help the city develop an action plan to make the city more
walkable.
Burden will run a "Pedestrian Road Show" sponsored by the city, the Colorado
Department of Transportation from 1 - 5 p.m., Thursday, at the Sheraton Resort. The
seminar is the first step in a campaign to improve conditions for pedestrians in the
community.
The seminar will discuss accident data, facility problems, local problem identification
and a vision for a walkable community.
It is a stated goal of city council to improve pedestrian routes throughout the
community.
