DP-71 PONTIS BMS
The PONTIS Pilot

PONTIS BMS is a comprehensive computer program, a state-of-the-art BMS that represents a radical new approach to decisionmaking for bridge programs. The software incorporates dynamic, probabilistic models and a detailed bridge database for predicting maintenance, improvement, and replacement needs. PONTIS is capable of recommending optimal policies and scheduling projects within budget and policy constraints. It differs from the inventory and management software now used by the 50 States, in that its description of bridge conditions is more detailed and its models are designed to operate on groups of bridges or whole inventories, rather than on individual structures. As many as 43 States have evaluated PONTIS and have conducted extensive Beta testing. The program software and manuals have been distributed, and all States will be able to evaluate and consider implementation of this comprehensive BMS.

The PONTIS BMS computer program was thoroughly evaluated and enhanced as part of a rigorous beta testing program. It was transferred to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) as an AASHTOWARE project for future maintenance, support, and enhancement. Over 40 highway agencies continue to license, evaluate and implement the current AASHTOWARE Program, Pontis V. 3.1.
