Conversion of FHWA Hydraulics Publications to Electronic Media
Migrating Publications to CD-ROM

The means by which we transfer new technology is changing rapidly. The purpose of this project is to provide technical support and engineering services to the staff of OTA to respond to the needs of the Office of Engineering in converting hydraulic publications and video to electronic media, specifically CD-ROM and hyper-video for delivery via CD-ROM

Existing hydraulic software will be converted to a Windows environment to allow them to be linked electronically to the publications. The primary focus of this effort is the conversion of existing Hydraulic Engineering Circulars, Hydraulic Design Series and corresponding videos to electronic media. Documents still in English units will be converted to the SI metric system of measurement.

As a part of an ealier effort, the interactive publication, HDS-5 "Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts (CD-ROM)", Publication No. FHWA-SA-96-081, was completed and distributed to all FHWA field offices and state highway agencies in November 1996. For information on obtaining additional copies contact the website http://www.pallasinc.com/. The CD-ROM is also available from McTrans, Gainesville, Florida.

Estimated at 2-1/2 years, the new project began in September 1996. Conversion of "Design of Riprap revetment" (HEC-11), "Hydraulic Design of Energy Dissipators for Culverts and Channels" (HEC-14) and "Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings" (HEC-15) are underway. HEC-18 (Scour), HEC-20 (Stream Stability), HEC-22 (Urban Drainage) and HDS-2 (Highway Hydrology) are next up.
