AP-12 Guidance on Use of Changeable Message Signs
All Lanes Open Ahead for CMSs

Changeable message signs (CMSs) play increasingly important roles in improved highway safety, operations, and use of existing facilities. CMSs have been used to provide advanced warning of major highway incidents and route diversion information. The use of CMSs for work zones has been very effective in alerting motorists of downstream lane closures during nighttime operations.

Two technology transfer publications about changeable message signs -Guidelines on the Use of Changeable Message Signs (FHWA-TS-90-043) and Guidelines on the Use of Changeable Message Signs-Summary Report (FHWA-TS-91-002) -comprise this project. The publications provide guidance on the selection of the appropriate type of CMS display and information on design and maintenance to improve target value and motorist reception of CMS messages.

This contract has been completed.

Copies of both publications are available from the National Technical Information Services (NTIS), 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Virginia 22161.
