To emphasize the partnership involved in implementing
the Superpave system, FHWA recently introduced a new Superpave logo. The
logo
shows the principal partners in the Superpave implementation program--namely,
the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials,
the highway industry, and FHWA. "Superpave 2000" signifies the
target date for nationwide implementation of the Superpave volumetric mix
design procedures.

Smith can be reached at 202-366-4057 (fax: 202-366-9981). Both Bauer and Smith are with FHWA's Pavement Division.
The Asphalt Institute has recently released the second
in its series of Superpave manuals. The manual, Superpave Level 1 Mix Design,
describes the volumetric mix design procedures in detail and provides an
overview of the performance prediction procedures. Topics
covered
include the asphalt and aggregate material selection procedures, asphalt
mixture volumetrics, volumetric mix design, and Superpave gyratory compactor
procedures. A detailed example of a Superpave volumetric mix design is
also included. The 130-page report is available from the Asphalt Institute
(telephone: 606-288-4960; fax: 606-288-4999).
