Highlights of specific items in the collections: New Jersey Society Sons of the American
Revolution
Badge of cloth, metal, celluloid(?) and paper. This badge was worn by attendees at the October 7, 1904 dedication of the monument to General Enoch Poor in Hackensack, New Jersey. A major focus of the activities of the Sons of the American Revolution is the recognition of the deeds of the men and women who helped create the United States of America. In addition to their many programs, they have also sponsored the creation of monuments, markers, and plaques remembering the heroes of the Revolution. This ribbon is from an event in which the New Jersey Society helped recognize the memory of General Enoch Poor, who played an important part in the Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Monmouth. His funeral was attended by both George Washington and Lafayette. George Washington wrote of him "He was an officer of distinguished merit, one who as a citizen and soldier had every claim to the esteem and regard of his country."
At the center of the medal is a plaque with an image of the monument.
On the reverse of the badge is the manufacturer's applied paper label.
