DESCRIPTION:
This study investigates transit agencies' and local and State governments' efforts to improve and
increase bicycling and walking to public transportation. Issues and problems that have remained
unaddressed are explored. A historic overview of transit access in the United States, as well as
statistics on current access in the United States and Europe are given. Both costs and benefits of
nonmotorized transportation are discussed. Recommendations to the federal government,
centering mostly on bicyclists, include the development of guidelines, marketing, and calls for
future research. A bibliography is included.
