DESCRIPTION:
This report develops guidelines for the design of pedestrian facilities for older persons to be used
by traffic planners and engineers. The mental and physical capabilities of older persons, including
visual perception, auditory processing, motor abilities, mobility disabilities, cognition, and
behavioral factors are explored. Recommendations for changes to design standards and
operational procedures are described. A field study that provides quantitative information on the
walking speed, startup time, and stride length of older pedestrians, crossing strategies, and a list
of references are included.
