This study focuses on strategies to remove impediments to bicycling and walking. Those concerning walking include distance, time, safety, pleasantness of path, weather, motivation, and difficulty carrying packages. The gap between perceived and real obstacles is explored. Strategies for improvement include facility improvements, educational/enforcement programs, and governmental policies. Specific examples for each are provided. Ways to measure the effectiveness of improvements are highlighted. A list of references is included.
