NHI to Offer Superpave Training Courses

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will soon offer three new training courses on the Superpave system. These courses are designed to give three different audiences—senior managers, staff engineers, and local government personnel—the information they need to understand Superpave technology and what it means for asphalt pavement. The courses will be available through the National Highway Institute (NHI) in cooperation with the Superpave regional centers.

"Superpave for Senior Managers" (course no. 13151) is intended for high-level management at State highway agencies and FHWA. Participants will gain a fundamental understanding of the Superpave system and the associated benefits and impacts. The half-day course will also cover implementation strategies and the refinements likely to result from the ongoing field verification.

"Superpave for the Generalist Engineer and Project Staff" (course no. 13152) is intended for area engineers, project engineers, district engineers, project managers, consulting engineers, and contractors. In the 2-day course, a team of instructors from a Superpave regional center will explain the rationale for the Superpave system and provide participants with the information they need to do their jobs as highway agencies adopt the Superpave technology. The course will include a thorough explanation of the Superpave tests and their role in mix design, quality assurance, and pavement performance.

"Superpave for Local Governments" (course no. 13153) is a 3-day course intended for the customers and staffs of the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) centers. The course will help participants understand this new technology and how it is likely to affect the paving programs of local governments.

The three courses are expected to be available beginning in late February or March 1997. Course materials were developed by the National Asphalt Training Center. The courses will be taught by instructors from the Superpave regional centers. The length and content of the courses may change slightly before they are made available.

The courses may be sponsored by State and local highway agencies, FHWA field offices, industry groups, engineering firms, universities, and other organizations. The sponsoring organization is responsible for inviting participants and supplying meeting rooms and audiovisual equipment.

To request any of the three courses, contact the FHWA division office in your State or Lynn Cadarr at NHI (telephone: 703-235-0528;
