Using products of the Strategic Highway Research
Program to build better, safer roads
March 1998
In Brief
- Mike Halladay, FHWA's SHRP implementation coordinator since 1996, was recently
named chief of the Technology Management Division within the FHWA Office of Technology
Applications. He replaces Ray Griffith, who is retiring after 32 years of service
with FHWA and 7.5 years of service prior to that with the Kansas Highway Commission. The
Technology Management Division provides operations and support services (including
publishing Focus) for FHWA's technology transfer programs and administers the Local
Technical Assistance Program.
- Corrosion of Steel in Concrete (E & FN Spon, England, 1997), a new
book by John P. Broomfield, provides an in-depth look at the cause, prevention, and repair
of corrosion of steel in concrete bridges. The book covers several concrete rehabilitation
technologies advanced by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). The author was a
member of the SHRP staff and is now an independent consultant.
- Joe Mickes, chairman of the TRB-SHRP Committee since 1995 and chief engineer of
the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department, was recognized at the committee's
January meeting for his dedicated service on behalf of SHRP implementation. Mickes was
presented with a certificate that read: Certificate of Appreciation presented to Joseph
A. Mickes in recognition of outstanding leadership and support to the implementation of
products from the Strategic Highway Research Program.
