Looking for the latest news on the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), the long-term pavement performance (LTPP) program, and other highway research efforts? Try the Internet's World Wide Web home pages set up by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and other agencies.
The FHWA
home page (http://cti1.volpe.dot.gov/ohim/)
offers both an overview of the agency and downloadable indexes of FHWA
publications. The site also has links to several FHWA offices that offer
extensive information on SHRP and the LTPP program.
The FHWA Office of Technology Applications (OTA) home page (http://www.avalon-ais.com/OTA/OTA.html), for example, includes on-line versions of Focus and other FHWA periodicals. The OTA home page also offers a list of upcoming conferences and other events, a database of technology application projects, and information on dozens of technology application categories.
For information on the LTPP program, visit FHWA's Office of Engineering and Highway Operations Research and Development home page (http://cti1.volpe.dot.gov/ohim/ltpp.html). Here, you'll find an extensive array of information on the LTPP program. You can also download the LTPP data sampler and data request software.
More information on SHRP can be found at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center home page (http://www.tfhrc.gov). The site includes several on-line publications and a database of research sorted by subject.
The Federal government isn't the only source of information on SHRP. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) home page (http://www.nas.edu/trb/), for example, includes information on SHRP publications.
Another resource is the Washington State Department of Transportation's SHRP Implementation & Evaluation Database (http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/fossc/OTA/SHRP), which offers product reviews, LTPP test site data, personnel directories, discussion groups, and more (see the March 1996 issue of Focus).
For information on the Superpave system, try the Superpave Regional Center at Austin, Texas (http://www.utexas.edu/research/superpave). Home pages have also been developed by the Southeastern Superpave Center in Auburn, Alabama (http://www.eng.auburn.edu/research/centers/ncat.html) and the North Central Superpave Center in West Lafayette, Indiana (http:cc.www.ecn.purdue.edu/CE/Research/SUPERPAVE/Superhome.html/).
Discussions are under way among FHWA, TRB, and States regarding how to best coordinate providing information via the World Wide Web. FHWA is currently developing its own home page for SHRP implementation, which will link to other available resources plus provide in-depth information on all SHRP products and implementation activities. FHWA's SHRP home page should be available in September.mentation activities. FHWA's SHRP home page should be available in September.
But until then you don't need Internet access to keep up on SHRP. With a PC-compatible computer, a 9600 baud modem, and software from FHWA, you can access the SHRP Clearinghouse. The on-line resource includes a directory of State and Federal employees associated with SHRP implementation and a list of SHRP products. For a free copy of the software, call Kimeerly Moody at Henderson Associates, 202-682-3739 (fax: 202-682-2535).
In other on-line news, FHWA is implementing a new electronic mail (email) address system. Effective this fall, FHWA addresses will change to a new format: Firstname.Lastname@fhwa.dot.gov or Firstname.Middle Initial.Lastname@fhwa.dot.gov. The old addresses will continue to be valid in the interim.
